When my son Tristan passed away tragically, I didn’t just lose him. I lost myself completely.

Not in the way people expect grief to work. This was different. When life stripped away my most important role – mother – I discovered something terrifying.

I didn't exist as a person. Only as a collection of functions.

I literally couldn’t see color anymore. The world turned grey because when you don’t know who you are beyond your roles, nothing has meaning. You’re not living. You’re performing life.

Sitting in my therapist’s office, she asked me the question that changed everything: “Who are you?“

I went completely blank.

Not “What do you do?” Not “What are your roles?” Just… “Who are you?“

I couldn’t answer. After 40+ years of living, I had no idea who Tracey was beyond mother, professional, achiever.
